Creighton University Students of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Occupational Therapy & Physical Therapy disciplines with an interest in:

  • Interprofessional health care practice
  • Working in a team
  • Addressing medical errors
  • Presenting case results to a panel of experts

What Is CLARION?
Teams comprising of 4 students across the health disciplines are given a fictitious sentinel healthcare event and as a team will present a root cause analysis to a panel of senior-level health executives and practitioners at the CLARION National Case Competition competing against interprofessional teams from Universities across the United States.

When Do CLARION Team Members Meet?
Teams will meet weekly based on a time the team can come together. There will be required trainings and then the case will be distributed in February 2009. Overall, the commitment is about 100 hours of work per team. CLARION Trainers and Mentors will provide the training and assistance for the team. At Creighton University, students receive credit for their participation through a 1-credit course entitled IPE 411 CLARION Case Competition.

Where Does the National Competition Take Place?
Practice sessions will take place at Creighton University. Case competition will take place on the University of Minnesota campus in April 9-10, 2010. Travel expenses to the Case Competition are provided for each student.

Why Does CLARION Focus on Medical Errors?
Each year tens of thousands of deaths occur from preventable medical errors.  Miscommunication and lack of communication among caregivers is cited as a main cause of the problem.  The primary goals of the CLARION Case Competition are for participants to develop an understanding and appreciation of the skills that each profession brings to the healthcare team and to develop positive relationships which will extend into their professional careers.
