Pharmacy grad begins residency
Omaha, Nebraska (July 11, 2005)
--- On July 8, 2005, Zachary Pool, a 2005 web-based
Doctorate of Pharmacy graduate, began a one-month
residency with the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Zach will be
fulfilling the post-graduate residency offered by the
Office of Interprofessional Scholarship, Service and
Education through HRSA Grant #1D36HPO3158 Circles of
Learning: Community and Clinic as Interdisciplinary
Classroom. The residency offers new graduates the
opportunity to immerse themselves in a culturally rich
environment while working half time in the pharmacy and
half time working to meet community needs. Resident get
to experience both the clinical and community aspects of
care and live in the community in housing on the
reservation.
During his time, Zach will offer a
polypharmacy clinic surrounding diabetes and completing
a library of patient education counseling sheets on high
risk drugs. Zach also will provide education on the safe
use and disposal of diabetic needles. Zach will be
working under the direction of pharmacist Kelly Kromer
in the Carl T. Curtis Health Education Center located in
Macy, Nebraska on the Omaha reservation.
Zach has extensive experience with
underserved communities including a pharmacy student
clerkship with Indian Health Service in Rosebud, South
Dakota. Prior to attending pharmacy school, Zach taught
middle school math and science in Swaziland in South
Africa as a member of the Peace Corp.
